This delightful concoction of mango, spice, and everything nice is a beloved Mexican street food classic that has taken the internet by storm as the “viral Mangonada.”

Mangonada is a culinary treasure that has stood the test of time, evolving from its humble street food beginnings in Mexico to becoming a beloved treat enjoyed worldwide. With its unique blend of flavors, it’s no wonder that the Mangonada has become a viral sensation on social media platforms.

Mangonada History

The Mangonada, often referred to as the “mango nada,” has its roots deeply embedded in Mexican culinary tradition. This refreshing drink is believed to have originated in the bustling streets of Mexico, where street vendors would craft these sweet and spicy delights using fresh mangoes, chamoy (a tangy and spicy fruit sauce), chili powder, and tamarind candy.

Over the years, the Mangonada has evolved and gained immense popularity not only in Mexico but also across the United States and other parts of the world.

What is a Mangonada Made With?

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s get acquainted with the key ingredients that make up this luscious drink:

  1. Mangoes: The star of the show, ripe and juicy mangoes are the heart and soul of any Mangonada. They provide the sweet and fruity base for this delightful concoction. I used frozen mangos in my recipe.
  2. Chamoy: This is the secret sauce that gives Mangonadas their signature tangy and spicy kick. Chamoy is typically made from pickled fruit, chili peppers, and lime, resulting in a mouthwatering flavor that perfectly complements the sweetness of the mangoes.
  3. Tajin: Tajin is a popular Mexican seasoning made from chili peppers, lime, and salt. It adds a zesty and salty contrast to the sweetness of the mangoes, creating a harmonious flavor profile.
  4. Tamarind Candy: Tamarind candy, often in the form of straw-like sticks or small candies, adds an extra layer of tartness and texture to the Mangonada.
  5. Ice: To keep your Mangonada refreshingly cold, you’ll need plenty of ice cubes.
  6. Optional Garnishes: Some enthusiasts like to garnish their Mangonadas with fresh lime wedges, mango chunks, or even a tamarind candy straw for an extra dose of flavor and fun.

Tips for the Perfect Mangonada

  1. Choose Ripe Mangoes: The key to a fantastic Mangonada is ripe mangoes. Look for mangoes that are slightly soft to the touch and have a fragrant aroma.
  2. Experiment with Spice: Adjust the amount of Tajin and chamoy sauce to suit your spice tolerance. Some like it mild, while others prefer it with a fiery kick.
  3. Texture Matters: Don’t skip the tamarind candy. It not only adds a unique flavor but also a pleasant chewy texture.
  4. Keep It Cold: The Mangonada is best served ice-cold, so use plenty of ice cubes in your glass.
  5. Get Creative: Feel free to get creative with your garnishes. Fresh fruit and extra tamarind candy can take your Mangonada to the next level.

How to Rim Your Mangonada Glass (and Why It’s Worth It)

To rim your glass, simply dip the edge in lime juice, then roll it in Tajín or chamoy powder for that bold, zesty finish. This quick extra step adds a spicy-sour kick in every sip and it makes your mangonada look extra eye catching for photos or guests.

Want to skip it? No problem! It’s optional, but highly recommended for the full flavor experience.
