Baked Vanilla Donuts

If you haven’t cooked with it before, then this is the day, where you are about to change your baking life. I have been using browned butter in a lot of my recipes recently.

Simply because it brings out so much flavor in your baked goods that make you feel like you grabbed it straight out of the bakery. That’s right, it’s that bakery-style treat yet you can make it in your own home.

How to Brown Butter

Is this your first time browning butter? Well, don’t freak out, because I’m going to help make sure you master this easy step.

  1. To brown your butter, simply add the cold butter to a room temperature medium saucepan.
  2. On medium heat let the butter melt completely while stirring often, this helps prevent the butter from burning. As the butter cooks it will start to turn a nutmeg brown color, this is the color that lets you know it’s done.
  3. Remove from heat immediately and then set aside to cool. That’s it! You did it!

You made brown butter! Now add this secret ingredient to other recipes to help enhance the flavor of your favorite desserts.

Pink Vanilla Glaze

For my vanilla donuts glaze, I made the glaze as instructed in the recipe card. This recipe features multiple pink glazes which I achieved using neon pink gel food coloring.

The easiest way to make an array of pink colors without making multiple batches of glaze is to add the gel food coloring in stages. For the lighter pink color, I added in a small number of drops until I achieved the light pink color I was looking for.

Dipping The Donuts

I dipped a few donuts and reserved a few tablespoons of the glaze in a plastic zip-lock bag for decorating purposes (alternatively you can use an icing bag).

Moving forward I added a few more drops of the neon pink gel food coloring to deepen the pink I was working with. I repeated this until I had the 3 colors of pink I was looking for, feel free to decorate the donuts with the leftovers.

Baked Donuts

When you try these baked donuts you will never miss a fried donut ever again. With baked donuts, you get all that fluffy light texture you know donuts to be without the grease that fried donuts have.

Are Baked Donuts Cake?

Well technically they are very similar to cake yet they are much lighter and require much less baking time. Thankfully with baked donuts, you can grab some nifty trays like the ones I use online at Amazon or in a store near you that sells home cookware.

Make sure to grab 2 pans if your tray only holds 6 donuts, or else you will be like me waiting patiently by the stove ready to unload and reload at warp speed.

Piping and Decorating

Remember above when I said I reserved a few tablespoons of vanilla glaze in a ziplock bag? Well, I admit that sometimes when I run out of piping bags I turn to my trusty ziplock’s. Treat them like any piping bag and snip the tip just a tad to use for decorating the Donuts.

Or even pipe the donut batter into the donut pans. I know it seems crazy and it’s a little messy, but when you do it once you will get the hang of it.

Ingredients

Vanilla Donut

  • 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 Cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Vanilla Glaze

  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 3–4 tablespoons milk or half and half
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • Gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and lightly grease a donut pan. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a large bowl, eggs, sour cream, buttermilk, browned butter, and vanilla until smooth. Gently fold the dry mixture into liquid mixture until just combined.
  3. Fill prepared donut pan 3/4 full of batter. Bake donuts at 350F 11-13 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool donuts in pan 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Vanilla Glaze

  1. Melt the butter and let cool slightly. In a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer in a medium bowl) add the powdered sugar, melted butter, milk, salt. Blend until well combined which can take anywhere from 2-3 minutes.
  2. Dip cool donuts into the glaze, turning your hand clockwise as you pull it out. This helps catch the glaze and create that smooth topcoat. Serve and Enjoy!
