A Bite of History: The Cuban (Cubano) Sandwich
The Cuban, or Cubano, has roots in the Cuban communities of Florida, especially Tampa and Miami. It started as a simple, affordable lunch for Cuban workers in the early 1900s, just a handful of flavorful ingredients pressed together on fresh Cuban bread.
Over time, it became a Florida icon. While Miami-style Cubanos stick to pork, ham, cheese, mustard, and pickles, Tampa’s version often adds salami. Either way, the sandwich has stood the test of time as a flavorful favorite.

All of these ingredients are easy to find and full of classic Cuban sandwich flavor. Feel free to improvise with whatever you have on hand. Once they’re layered and pressed, you’ll have a warm, crispy Cubano ready to enjoy.
- Cuban bread (French or Italian bread works too)
- Sliced roast pork
- Sliced ham
- Swiss cheese
- Dill pickles, sliced lengthwise
- Yellow mustard
- Butter, for grilling/pressing

Grilled Cuban Sandwich Cooking Tips
- Bread matters: Use Cuban bread if you can find it. If not, go for French or Italian bread that’s firm enough to press.
- Press it right: A panini press is easiest, but you can use a skillet with another heavy pan (or even a foil-wrapped brick!) on top.
- Keep it balanced: Don’t overload the fillings—too much can make the bread soggy instead of crisp.
- Butter the outside: A light butter layer on the bread helps it toast to golden perfection.

Customize Your Cuban Sandwich
If you’re a cheese lover, swap Swiss for provolone, mozzarella, or even pepper jack for a spicy twist. Need more spice? Add a little kick to the sandwich by spreading a little chipotle mayo or hot mustard for extra heat. Or try it Tampa-style by adding slices of salami for a traditional Tampa version.
