Copycat Olive Garden Chicken Gnocchi Soup
One of my favorite things to eat at our local Olive Garen restaurant is their Chicken Gnocchi Soup. I can’t tell you how upsetting it is when I find out I’m just a little bit too late and they are out of my favorite soup for the day.
Since I seem to be just a little bit too late to enjoy my favorite soup, I figured I had to come home and make my own version, in my Magic Pot of course! In my version, I keep it classic. Yet if you are adventurous, you can mix it up and add some fried bacon bits as I suggest in the recipe card below.
Easy Chicken Gnocchi Soup
I have tested this soup out with my family and a few other family members and I think I nailed it! It is even better the next day when you eat it at work or in your own kitchen.
I love to add more spinach before I warm it up to give it that huge punch of spinach that I love. It’s super creamy and perfect for those cold winter days, or if your just craving some delicious creamy soup.
Chicken Gnocchi Soup Ingredients
This creamy flavorful soup recipe includes meat, fresh vegetables, cheese, heavy cream, chicken stock, and Gnocchi. Bump up this recipe by adding bacon! A quick savory spin to this delicious soup recipe that really bumps up the flavor!
Meat. The best meat to use for this recipe is chicken breast, however, you can use chicken tenders or thighs. (Optional: add bacon)
Fresh Vegetables. This copycat recipe includes ingredients you would see in the Olive Garden chicken gnocchi soup. Fresh carrots, spinach onions, onions, garlic, thyme, rosemary, and celery.
Liquids. This soup recipe calls for heavy cream, chicken stock, and cheese. Please feel free to switch out any of these ingredients with non-dairy or low-calorie substitutes. Please be advised the thickness of the soup will depend on the substitutions. See recipe notes for tips on how to easily thicken the soup.
Gnocchi. For easy quick dinners I like to use store-bought gnocchi, but please feel free to use what your family loves in this soup recipe.
Cooking The Chicken Gnocchi Soup
One thing I absolutely love about this soup recipe is that it’s made completely in the instant pot. This one-pot soup is a lifesaver during my busy weeknights.
After you have followed all of the recipe directions, seal the pot and cook it on the suggested setting and time. Do a quick manual pressure release and then follow the last steps. See recipe notes for helpful tips on how to thicken the soup to your family’s preference.
Instant Pot Chicken Gnocchi Soup Cooking Tips
- To thicken the soup simply add 2 tablespoons of corn starch with 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl, mix well. Set pot to saute and then add the corn starch and water mixture. Boil the soup for about 3-4 minutes, or until you have reached your desired consistency.
- This recipe is fantastic with or without the fried bacon bits. If you want to add another level of flavor, try maple bacon bits. Hey! Don’t knock it till you try it.

Made this tonight and my family wasn’t quite taken with it. It seemed like the only flavor was the thyme. The half and half also didn’t quite make it creamy to our liking. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad recipe, it simply means we didn’t care for it.
Same. It was good. But did not taste like Olive Garden. Missing something.

OMG YESSSSSSS. I’ve been looking for a copycat of this soup for my Instant Pot. Thank you!
Soup was excellent! I used fat-free half-and-half (because that’s what I use in my coffee) and it was perfect. A filling weeknight meal for the whole family! Thanks!
I’m so happy you liked the Recipe Sarah! Thank you for sharing! 😀
This tasted great!!! Next time I will half the amount of gnocchi called for. Thanks for the recipe!
My IP Lux doesn’t have a manual “low” setting. Any suggestions?
Hi Danielle, For your IP Lux you can use the Soup/Broth Button. If for any reason the Gnocchi isn’t fully cooked after you follow the 2nd half of the cooking instructions let it boil in Saute mode until fully cooked. I hope that was helpful, please let me know how it turns out in your specific pot, I’d love to know how it turns out for you. 😀

My Husband loves this soup at the Olive Garden. Could you share the brand of gnocchi you buy or what department I’d find it in.
Super yummy recipe. Changes I’ll make next time include: increasing the liquid, there wasn’t enough soup
decreasing the chicken, cooking the gnocchi longer, and adding double the spinach.
I used the better than bullion chicken base to make the chicken broth and it was super yummy.
Thank you so much for this! It was super tasty!!!
If I double the recipe how long should I cook it for (step 2) or is doubling not recommended?
Made this last night, amazing!
Is the gnocchi that is used in this recipe fresh or frozen?
Made this last night and everyone loved it. Just added a little flour to thicken. Bearly enough for leftovers.
Did you use thyme leaves or ground thyme?
How much soup does this make? Would adding an additional package of gnocchi throw off the recipe?
Hi Kat, this recipe makes about 8 bowls of soup for my family. The extra pack of gnocchi would yield a more dense soup, you can increase the liquid Ingredients in the soup to accommodate the extra package.
Can frozen chicken breast and frozen spinach be used? If so what are there any time adjustments?
Frozen should be just fine. Will add extra water to your soup though, you can throw some flour in the mixture once it’s finished to thicken it up. On a simmer in your pot slowly add in sprinkles on flour and whisk in until it reaches the consistency to your liking.
Looks delicious. I never go to Olive Garden, but I love this idea. You just need to change the spelling of the word breats to breasts on your ingredient list.
Made this tonight and it was amazing!!! Thanks for the recipe!!
That’s awesome Kelly! So happy you liked the recipe. Did you have any leftovers to reheat for tomorrow?
Good, but definitely needed garlic. I also will use mostly broth next time and finish it off with a little heavy whipping cream versus using all the half and half.
Exactly! Any Italian soup has got to have garlic in it! I added 2T and it was great. Excellent recipe others.

Can I use.cooked chicken and how long would I cook?
I think it will be fine, you can use the recipe as described, if anything you can pull back the time by a few minutes.
Would this recipe be okay to freeze and reheat later? Are there any adjustments you would suggest to allow for this? Thanks!!
Hi Ashley, freezing it would be perfectly fine. I would suggest if you do reheat later that you add a liquid base to the pot so when it begins to warm up it doesn’t burn the frozen soup onto the sides. I’m not 100% percent sure what the measurement of the liquid would need to be to achieve that as I’ve always had my Kids and I finish the pot of soup in one sitting or have reheated leftovers in the microwave. I hope that was helpful. If you do figure out those measurements and have tried freezing it please come back and let me know how that worked out for you as well as what you did when heating it back up. I would love to know and add that to the post for others like yourself looking to freeze and reheat later.
I just made this recipe for the gnocchi soup in my electric pressure cooker, OMG it was so delicious!! I I am printing it to use again. Thanks So Much for posting it!! 🙂
